Into the Karst: Cave & Castle
Travel beneath the surface into Postojna’s extraordinary cave world, then continue to a medieval castle built dramatically into a 123-metre cliff.

Postojna & Predjama: Slovenia Above and Below Ground
Postojna Cave turns the journey underground into an attraction in itself. The wider cave system extends for approximately 24 kilometres, while the visitor experience includes a 3.7-kilometre underground train ride followed by a walk through vast chambers and richly decorated formations.
Only a few kilometres away, Predjama Castle appears almost impossibly embedded in the mouth of a cavern. The castle has occupied its position within a 123-metre-high cliff for more than 800 years, and is recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s largest cave castle.
Exploring the Karst: Four Stops to Experience
1. Postojna Cave Train
The journey begins aboard Postojna Cave’s celebrated underground railway. Cave tourism here has a remarkable history: its first underground railway opened in 1872.
2. The Brilliant & Great Halls
Continue on foot among stalactites, stalagmites, columns and enormous chambers. The five-metre bright-white stalagmite known as Brilliant has become a symbol of the cave.
3. Proteus — the “Baby Dragon”
Postojna is also famous for the olm, an unusual cave-dwelling amphibian locally associated with legends of baby dragons.
4. Predjama Castle
After the subterranean world, step into the medieval one. Explore rooms built directly into the cliff and discover legends associated with the castle’s most famous resident, Erazem of Predjama.
